Bears Fans - Let's Be Real

Posted on: March 1, 2008 1:53 am

Over the past 24 hours or so, the Bears board has been awash with angry threads and posts about the Bears and Jerry Angelo doing a rotten job in the free agent market - never mind that JA has pretty much communicated that he would rather invest big money to keep their own and make smart economical selections in the FA market.  Whether we agree with this philosophy is fair game.  But, expecting him to behave differently means that we have not been paying attention to how he has said he would behave.

Never mind that the Bears have multiple needs in the O-line, backfield, receiver, safety, probably LB, and probably DT - go out and over pay this one guy, he is my favorite.  I want the Bears to win badly.  However, I choose to be realistic about that.  I would much rather see the Bears be smart and attempt to address as many needs as possible as opposed to making a couple of splashy signings, but coming up short come training camp because there are too many other things that have gone unaddressed.  Trust me, I am not defending Angelo as much as I beginning to wonder what exactly does it mean to be a fan?

Each year, only one team wins the SB.  31 other teams go unsuccessful each season.  For me, that bit of perspective allows me to be a fan and root for the Bears with some realistic sanity about how I view their operations.  A GM comes out and states what his philosphy is and how he is going to pursue the off season.  The only realistic expectation I can then have is for him to behave accordingly.  I may or may not agree with his approach, or the choices made using that approach.  But, I have to appreciate that he has a plan and is attempting to execute it.  It was not long ago when us Bears fans did not have a clue about what the FO was doing because the FO had no clue as to what they were doing.  Jerry Angelo has built a team that has won 3 division titles and been to a Super Bowl.  That does not get him a bust in the HOF, but it should allow him room to operate without doomsday judgements rendered 12 hours into the FA period.

I cannot imagine how stressful it is to be a fan that is only sated if his team wins it all.  I am a Chicagoan.  I have been a fan of the Bears, Cubs, and Bulls for nearly 40 years.  I have seen bad Bears teams.  No, I mean really bad teams.  I witnessed a 1-13 team in the early 70's.  I have lived through Abe Gibron and Dave Wannstedt.  I have watched Michael McCaskey flounder.  I have been forced to watch Stan Thomas, Curtis Enis, Rashaan Salam and Cade McNown.  I know bad.  So, by no means am I happy with a 7-9 season.  But, I also can sense when a FO has no confidence in their plans and procedures.  I know the difference between being a disaster and catching bad breaks.  Jerry Angelo is not perfect.  But he is far from being terrible.

Show some patience, Bears fans.  And, show that you do know the game.  Every FA with a name is not going to be signed by the Bears.  The salary cap  requires that you make smart moves and sometimes, tough moves.  No team will ever be without needs.  Hopefully, JA and his plan can minimize the needs for the Bears.  There is this FA period, the draft, the FA period following the draft, and the June 1 salary cap purge for Angelo to use to attempt to improve the Bears.  I will reserve judgement on this off season until all this takes place.  I have no idea if the Bears will have a contending team in '08.  I also have no idea if they will be bad this coming year either.  The NFL has become a year to year proposition.  You can fly high one year and finish under .500 the next.  Each off season, you can build a contending team from the ashes of the previous season.  At this date, I am trying to figure out why so many Bears fans are so unhappy.

Bears Fans - Let's Be Real

THANK YOU JAZZMAN!!!

I don't understand what some fans are thinking. Some "clowns" (you know who I am refering to Jazzman) have a short memory. In the past 3 seasons, the Bears have won 2 division titles and gone to a Super Bowl. There are a lot of franchises just hoping to reach .500 (see the Raiders).

So, why are people getting worried. First of all, IT'S ONLY BEEN A LITTLE OVER 24 HOURS SINCE FREE AGENCY STARTED!!! Sure, the Bears might not make a huge splash, but heck, neither do a lot of other teams. I personally think that this free agent market is not too hot. Alan Faneca looked good, but honestly, in 3 years, he's done. Why should the Bears go back into the same boat we just sunk in? Michael Turner would be a nice pick-up, but he's going to have a high price tag. Unfortunately, Cedric Benson isn't going anywhere so getting an expensive running back is moot.

Also, do people forget that there is a draft? Most Super Bowl winners develop key players through the draft. Sure, they make a small acquisition here and there, but the draft is where it's at. Heck, the Giants used the draft to build most of the team that won the Super Bowl this season.

I am not sure about the Bears either coming into next season, but I know things could be worse. Jerry Angelo has some knowledge believe it or not. Heck, Raiders fans would LOVE to have him running their team right now. Man, I got to quit knocking on Oakland.

I'm not saying that we should go out and spend big money to get someone like Randy Moss, butwe do  have to address SOME not ALL of our needs via free agency because the draft will not cover all of the Bears needs alone.

We also invested money in Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton. From a WR standpoint and oline stand point we have to be able to give them playmakers or at least someone with WR experience.

I can agree with that.  But, have you read some of the posts on the Bears board?  They were blasting Angelo for not making a big splash with just 12 hours elapsed in the FA period.  I do not think I posted anything above that is contrary to the Bears addressing their needs.  What I am referring to are unrealistic expectations and overall lack of knowledge of how teams are built.

Show some patience Bear fans....

It could be worst, you could be a Lions fan and patience is measured in decades not seasons. We will trade Matt Millen for Jerry Angelo any day of the week.

The only real questionable moves looking at your team as an outsider is why resign both Orton and Grossman? It would seem that bringing in veteran like Trent Green ( using him as an obvious example ) would be a better stop gap than running Grossman back out there. Take it from a fan that watched Harrington take the field three seasons too long. Cut bait and move on. And why let Muhammad go without having Berrian locked up or a plan B in place.

Ok so the Bears did nothing yesterday but look at it like this....Lance Briggs hasn't signed with anyone and the only team interested in him is New Orleans. But they most likely won't sign him because they just got John Vilma. Benard Berrian can go for all I care. He is greedy and there is no way I am paying him big dollars so I can watch him drop wide open passes. The Bears need to go after someone like Michael Turner, Julius Jones, Donte Stallworth, Javon Walker, or just concentrate on re-signing Briggs. Either way the Bears need to start getting their hands into FA ASAP or else we can wave bye bye to the playoffs behind old faithful Rex Grossman ( Mr. Inconsistant a.k.a. Mr. Interception, a.k.a. Mr. Fumble, a.k.a. I Don't Know How To Scamble) I would rather have Kyle Orton start he looked pretty decent in his games he played this year. And with the offense being built around Devin Hester he will draw many double teams because of his speed which will open up the field, and thats why we need one more good reciever and maybe a better RB.

well we have lance back so i guess jerry is doing something. As a fan (in rugby league) of a team that consistently scrapes around the bottom of the top division and has only made the playoffs once ever i have no qualms with being patient at all. lad to see other people who have sanity too.

Bears Fans - Let's Be Real

Very wise post jazzman.  Even though you probably dont see my name around as much as some, i do read your posts.

The fact remains that the Bears need to find ways to win, no matter what.  This past year wasnt nearly as bad as everyone thought.  Sometimes we all really want that standout name in FA or the draft, and beat it into our posts over and over so some of us will read.  Although im a sophmore in college, i have seen some bad years as well.  The wanny, mcnown, enis era i witnessed, and it wasnt pretty.  Ive seen our QB go from Rick Mirer to Steve Stenstrom to Chad Huchinson to Moses Moreno, and even Cade .  I still remember the days of Rashan Salaam, Curtis Conway, and Eric kramer.

This blog is a reality check we all needed.  We probably wont see the Bears do what other teams have done in FA, by signing the biggest names available, but we all shouldnt assume that the people in the front offices of the Bears organization dont know what theyre doing because they didnt get the guy you or me wanted.

You're trying to find out what makes me and fellow Bears fans unhappy?  For me, Im really not terribly upset.  Nothing a few new faces cant cure.  My patience is being tested with Ron Turner, but i think he will switch it up a little more like in 06.  Thanks for the concern though.

I'm not all about the big name free agents per se. I was not one of those people who wanted Michael Turner when the draft has several RBs for cheap.

What I do want though is a WR who has more than a 2 years of experience in the position which as of right now I don't believe the Bears have.

The above is a link to an article from today's Chicago Sun-Times.  The writer, Mike Mulligan, is a NFL Columnist for the Sun-Times as well as radio host in Chicago.  It offers a similar take on the Bears and adds additional reasons to see it from a different POV.

My comments are not intended to praise the Bears method.  I may have opted to franchise Berrian.  But, when you consider that Tillman and Vasher could have also been a part of this FA class, it does put some shine on what the Bears have already accomplished.  WR remains a need and the Bears chose not to over pay Berrian, I can live with that.
